New Digital Camera!

Posted by Smartdog Jun. 15, 2008 @ 11:32 AM EDT

Just opened up a brand new digital camera my parents bought me as a graduation present, I am going on a trip to Montreal this Tuesday as well so I'll need it! I received the Canon PowerShot A470, I am really enjoying it. Many people will say tiny cameras like these aren't the greatest, and we all need photographer cameras with the huge lenses and all the special gadgets and stuff. This camera does the trick, it's amazing! Great shutter speed, and it comes with a 2.5" LCD Monitor , and many other features to make your pictures just how you want them to be. You don't have to wait a second for the picture to be taken, for it quickly snaps for you, this camera is slick and a great buy.

I would recommend it to about anyone, though if you really are a "hardcore" photographer kind of guy, keep saving your money my friend...

Thoughts on the Tank Awards...

Posted by Smartdog Jun. 8, 2008 @ 9:15 PM EDT

First, DON'T READ THIS!

The Tank Awards, didn't seem as "Epic" as I had pictured. We all happily awaited the winners to be announced, but afterwards, everyone seemed to be acting like nothing happened. Probably because it was only given to 2 particular submissions, and that it wasn't extremely community based. Just my thought.

I was a little disappointed to see that Waterlollies won, and this failed to surprise me. The talented animator that Adam Phillips is, I was just a little disappointed. I would have liked to see a more active Newgrounds member win, that contributes to Newgrounds and does more than just submit Flashes (Yes I am aware of the award Luis won, and that Animation awards don't have anything to do with activeness. I hope you know where I'm coming from). Also, this man is of course a former Disney animator with large amounts of training, practice and of course talent. I would have mainly liked to see a complete "Flash-based" winner, that has been with flash from the start and is a large part of this style of animation. Phillips is no doubt a great part of Newgrounds, but he simply isn't a Newgrounds geared Flash guy. Yes, my thoughts are clustered but I hope somone understands, wishing no offense to Adam Phillips.

Newgrounds Rumble on the other hand, I thought was a fair choice. The one thing that really "Grinds my gears" is that: First, MindChamber is part of staff, and that Luis had already won an award, and that he is nearly treated like staff. Negative One is really the only member of this trio who should really deserve this award!

In short, I was honestly a little disappointed. These submissions are no doubt amazing! Don't think that I don't like them, they're great. I just think the judges should have thought about who they were truly voting to win. Then again, these awards are all about the quality of the animation, but I hope you'll understand my thoughts.

That feels better.

Indiana Pwns!

Posted by Smartdog May. 27, 2008 @ 7:16 PM EDT

Don't worry, no spoilers kids.

On a cold Saturday night I had ventured off with my father to one of my favorite places: The movies. We had already had our minds set on what movie we would feast our eyes upon, and were already chanting the theme song in the parking lot. It had been over 25 years since our favorite whip-cracking archaeologist (possibly the only one) hit the big screen, and took the entertainment business by storm. Now, he was back, and he was more magnificent, and... older than ever!

The two of us of course saw Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

After actually waiting in line to get into the movie theater, though we weren't surprised, we slowly made our way to our seats near the middle of the giant room. The adventure soon began (maybe I'm exaggerating a little bit).

Placed just over ten years into the future, Henry Jones (Harrison Ford) is happy with his easygoing teaching job. Though, as he says in the movie, he is still "part time" explorer, adventure, and one and only Indiana Jones. He is still keeping in touch with agencies, and they are watching him closely as well. After he believes his Indy days are finally over, he has gained quite a reputation and is basically captured and entangled in a "Soviet plot" and forced to find the secret behind the famous artifacts known as "The Crystal Skulls". Lead by their evil "Physic, paranormal obsessed" leader Irina Spalko(Cate Blanchett). Indy is determined to discover the truth behind the Crystal Skulls before his enemies do, and even with the help of his team, this might be his hardest job yet.

Supporting roles include Karen Allen, Shia LaBeouf, Ray Winstone, and John Hurt.

I found this movie to be probably one of my favorite movies in a long time, it simply blew my mind. This movie had my eyes popping all of the time, and my mouth wide open. The action was extremely intense, though it was way over the top I wouldn't have had it any less (That's just the way these movies work!). This movie was just action sequence after action sequence, and still kept an amazing yet odd concept, and made it enjoyable all around. It was great to see Harrison back cracking his whip, along side with some of my favorite up-rising actors such as Shia LaBouef. From amazing explosions, to fantastic car chases, this is probably one of my favorite movies I've seen.

Check this movie out! See it in the theaters, because it's worth spending over 8 bucks to get in plus drinks and snacks... I think.

PSP and God of War!

Posted by Smartdog May. 8, 2008 @ 9:25 PM EDT

I have found the holy grail of hand held console games, and hand held consoles for that matter.

A few weeks ago I got my hands on a Piano Black PSP, and it's quite amazing. Great features, good picture quality, everything you want in a Hand Held. Just when I had thought my "video game senses" had been happily dealt with, I found God of War: Chains of Olympus. I honestly believe this game is the best (mind the bold) hand held game I've ever PALYED (mind the misspelled "Played").

This is nearly gaming at it's best. Ready at Dawn Studios have taken advantage and used everything capable of the PSP systems, and this action packed, spine crushing, bone crunching filled game is worth checking out. If you've got a PSP, don't get caught without this slick game.

Now please don't bitch and whine about how much you might think this game sucks, cause I could honestly care less. Good Bye.

The Magnificence of 'Juno'

Posted by Smartdog Apr. 24, 2008 @ 9:25 PM EDT

Many of you Newgrounders have most likely seen, or heard of the dramatic-comedy about 'life' simply titled Juno. This goes inside the head of a young girl who appears to be innocent, unthoughtful, care free girl. This girl is far from anything to do with care free.

I honestly thought this film was nearly a masterpiece. Throughout the movie you are blessed with the thoughts of Juno (Actress Ellen page), and they make your jaw drop. The simplicity, the sarcasm, no hesitation, every part of this is great. The mind of this young girl turns the whole movie around and puts a completely different spin on just about everything. This movie will make you laugh, and you'll later be saying to yourself "Wow, I never thought of that".

This film gives you the harsh, and the amazing reality of the 'teenage' years, of course mainly teenage pregnancy. Though this movie is much more than just another film looking through a teenagers eyes. This film discusses many experiences of life in general, and can relate to just about anyone. Amazing Movie.

On a last note, as a huge musical kind of guy, I thoroughly enjoyed the soundtrack of this movie. I have decided to begin working on a 'No rush' project, using one of the tracks used in this movie, specifically Tire Swing by KImya Dawson. That is if I ever get around to it from the mounds of homework I've had, and simply just thinking about life.

I am aware that I haven't been very active lately, for several reasons I;m not going to talk about. Soon, I'm going to start posting, submitting, and joining collabs. I will be more active! Bye, and go see JUNO!

Posted by Smartdog Apr. 16, 2008 @ 5:00 PM EDT

Haven't posted in a little while, so I thought I'd post something neat.

Soon, I'll be posting about some upcoming projects of mine, after this terrible week's over.

Yesterday I was a little bored, and had some magazines, and some Newgrounds stickers laying around so I decided I'd "Pimp out" my tablet. Sorry if the quality isn't that great (i'll take another one later), but what do you guys think?

TOON REVIEW #2: "Hunt of the Shoopacabra"

Posted by Smartdog Feb. 15, 2008 @ 10:47 AM EST

TOON REVIEW 2

Here I am again with my second flash toon review, enjoy:

1. Hunt Of The Shoopacabra

Alpha-Nuva never stops shocking me with his madness tributes because of their originality. He doesn't just make "another madness flash", instead he revamps the whole concept.

Anyways, this flash of course uses the whole "Shoop Da Whoop" joke kind of thing, which is quite famous around here to those who understand it. either way, you'll still have a great time if you've never heard of it before. I thought I'd review this because I've been watching Alpha's flashes for a little while and he seems to have taken some notice about me, and just because this flash is so original and great.

To start off, the graphics and look of this movie were stunning. I could see that just about everything in this flash had a fair amount of detail, such as the forest environments and the way everything was put together. Sometimes it can be difficult to make the graphics of a Madness flash look amazing without ruining the somewhat simple look Krinkels gave us all with his series, but Alpha managed to pull it off.

This flash was very smooth, and the characters movements were quite natural and didn't seem choppy at all. With each movement a character in the movie took, the move was anticipated well and eased in and out. Everything seemed to fit in properly with their movements, expressions, and anticipation.

This has to be one Madness tribute that I've really noticed the audio. Alpha-Nuva chose a wide variety of music, sounding perfect for his flash. Some of the audio tracks were even re-creations of the original Madness audio tracks done by Sean Hodges. Audio was just great.

Well, this part is going to be somewhat difficult for me to do since I've given such a kind review so far (lol), but there always has to be a miss or room for improvement in each Flash toon. To begin, the beginning of this cartoon was a little slow. I didn't find it too bad at all, but (because the rest of the flash was so fantastic) the beginning may seem slow paced to others. Secondly, this flash was a little confusing and hard to follow. You'd have the trio of "emo bears" and "lemon head" walking through the door in this cartoon thinking to yourself "what?". This flash was very original of course, but seemed a little too random.

I am going to give Hunt Of The Shoopacabra a 9/10

HITS
Stunning Graphics
Smooth and Spontaneous
Variety of great audio
Character moves were natural and anticipated well

MISSES
A little too random and confusing (still nicely done either way)
Others may find the beginning slow

Phew, that was little tough. I didn't want to make anyone angry, or on the other hand think I was maybe being too generous, so I hope you enjoyed this review. Comments are appreciated.

Have a flash you want reviewed? Post a comment here, or PM me!

TOON REVIEW #1

Posted by Smartdog Feb. 6, 2008 @ 12:05 AM EST

TOON REVIEW #1

Hey Newgrounds,

This is a new blog post I'll do when I get the chance to called "Toon Review". I'm gonna be posting full honest reviews here if you're wondering if something is truly worth playing or watching. This heres my first one, so gimme a chance and we'll see how I do. Feel free to post comments on how I can improve, cause everybody who criticizes likes to be criticized. Right?

1. Inclines¹³

First up I'm having a look at a stick cartoon titled Inclines¹³ by th1rt3en. This flash is a bit of a re-creation of a Donkey Kong kind of styled thing, let's get down to business.

I thought this flash was, alright. I really don't think it deserved the score it got, for a few reasons. First, the concept wasn't overly original with sticks trying to get past obstacles. It's been done before, and before. Secondly, it could have had a little bit more action besides each stick being crushed with a barrel. Though this flash did have good action, this flash need a bit more. It would have been nice to see more unexpected things, and to see the sticks struggle more and show more emotion (even for a stick). Thirdly, it was all around too short, and I expected more happening all around. Lastly, I would have liked a better ending, rather than the remaining stick going up the ladder.

The characters body movements were a little slow moving, but it was extremely smooth and well presented anyways. How it was shown was fairly good, because the flash didn't just focus on one specific spot for the whole animation (ie. one guy moves, the next guy moves), making it crazier and better to watch. There isn't too much for me to say here, except that it was a good concept using "Donkey Kong", and it was truly good!

Audio was fine for an animation like this, because all you really needed was a song playing, anything else might have made it sound bad. Not that I can personally judge the music, but it was good for me!

I am going to give Inclines¹³ a 7.5/10

HITS
Very smooth
Well presented
Action happening all around (even if it was a little bland)
Liked the Donkey Kong feel to it

MISSES
Not too original (aside from DK)
Needed better action and unexpectedness
Too short
Bad ending

Well, there you have it. A brutally honest review I hope. I appreciate comments as long as they aren't highly offensive! Thanks for reading!
